The trends of the times are leaning towards more people moving from a tv stand to a tv wall mount. Modern flat screen televisions look extremely nice hanging on the wall and with the numerous types of mounts available you should be able to locate one for any room. Below are a few of the different kinds of tv wall mounts available.

Flat TV Wall Mount

This is the easiest wall mounting solution. Flat wall mounts normally contain two pieces. One attaches to the TV and the other attaches to the wall. You thenslide the tv onto the mount from the top and the unit is held securely close to the wall. The only concerns are top clearance and stud placement in your walls so the TV can be lifted above and slid down onto the mount into it’s final secure position.

Tilt TV Wall Mount

Resembling the flat mount, the tilt mount often comes as 2 pieces. A mounting plate that goes on the wall bracket for the television and the tilt mechanism. Installation is essentially the same as the flat mount. THe difference being that tilt mounts allow a range of downward and upward tilt and when in a flat position does’nt hold the television quite as close to the wall as a flat mount bracket does.

Articulating TV Wall Mount

The most spending and versatile wall mounting solution is the articulating mount. This usally consist of one or more arms with any number of moveable joints and a tilting mechanism at the and of the arm(s). These type mounts are useful when the TV needs to be able to be moved to view at multiple angles or when the best area for wall mounting the TV isn’t where you’d appreciate watching the TV, such as in a corner.

TV Ceiling Mount

Not quite a wall mount but it still gets your TV up off the stand, a ceiling mount is a good choice if you want to mount the TV in corner or open area. Typically they are used in commercial applications but some people have found good uses for them in their homes. Ceilng mounts are usually a dual or single pole design and can include tilt and 360° swivel capabilities.

TV Ceiling Lift

The spendiest mounting solution is a lift, these mounts are usually motorized and hide the TV away in the ceiling when not in use. There are typically two designs, a folding lift (pictured left) and a vertical lift (pictured right). A vertical lift raises and lowers the TV vertically and is the better choice for heavier TVs while the folding lift rotates up into the ceiling so the TV is held horizontally when not in use. The folding style is most useful in situations where there’s not clearance enough to lift the whole of the TV into the ceiling vertically.

A Display

The first–and most important–item you’ll need is a 3D-ready display–whether it be a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays usually have a higher processing power than older models as they need to display one image for each eye to create a 3D effect.

A Source

While your display is ready for 3D playback, you still need a device to read 3D content (i.e., a movie or a show). This source can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3.

Content

In order to watch 3D, you will need to get some 3D content. This 3D content will come from the source mentioned above in the form of a 3D program, movie, or game. Please ensure that your 3D movies are in the Blu-ray 3D format, as this new format will provide the best 3D experience.

3D Glasses

All 3D HDTVs on the market require Active Shutter glasses to create the 3D effect. You will need to buy one pair of glasses for each viewer. Also make sure that the Active Shutter glasses you buy are compatible with your display–for example, buy the glasses from the same brand as your 3D HDTV.

I purchased this Belkin “video” firewire cable through Amazon, and am pleased with the quality of the product. While not nearly as inexpensive as some of the other generic ones available through Amazon, it is clearly well-built and is around half the price of the standard ones you find at retail stores such as Wal-mart, Radio Shack and Best Buy. The Belkin BKNAV2200106 PureAV Digital Camcorder FireWire Cable FireWire 4-Pin to 6-Pin 6 Feet cable provides a solid (well-fitted) connection to my Toshiba Vista notebook and the WD MyBook external hard drives I use, and playback of the recorded video on these hard drives through Windows Media Center and Media Player is super-smooth. File backups through the cable seems snappy too.
